An attempt of use of zoooplankton from municipal sewage treatment plant' retention pond, as food for rearing of pike (Esox lucius L.) larvae

An attempt of rearing pike larvae based on natural food was undertaken. The experiment was conducted in a municipal sewage treatment plant in Drawno from April till May 2004. Zooplankton consisting mainly of caldocerans Daphnia magna and copepods Eucyclops serrulatus taken from a sewage retention pond was used as food. Two experimental plots were set: in 20 l basins dug in the ground, and in 75 l cages immersed in the retention pond. During the experimental increase of pike larvae length, their alimentary tract content, fish death rate, and species composition of offered food were analysed. Most of the larvae did not start feeding. Also high fish death rate was noted
