The purpose of this research is to estimate fertility of acidic soils (pH 3.9, pH 5.4, pH 6.0) by exploring the number and enzymatic activity of microorganisms in the soil and to improve fertility of examined soils by using microbial inoculants and calcium carbonate. Researches have been made in laboratories that serve for need of the course in Microbiology, Agriculture and Truck Farming Department, School of Agriculture in Novi Sad, Serbia and in the laboratory of Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad, Serbia. Examination of the effect made by microbial inoculants on the improvement of biological characteristics of acidic soils (pH 5.4) has been made in supervised conditions. Red clover seed was inoculated by rhizobium, azotobacter and actinomycetes, and their mixtures. Only a small number of examined groups of microorganisms has been detected because of strong acidic reaction in all of three types of soils. The biggest number and enzymic activity of microorganisms has been detected in calcocambisol. The best effect of inoculants on the number of microorganisms has been seen in the mixture made of all of the three groups of microorganisms combined with calcification. The biggest lenght and dry mass has been measured in plants which were inoculated by rhizobium with calcification.
