Survey on the presence of Avian influenza in Montenegro | Ispitivanje prisustva avijarne influence u Crnoj Gori
2009
Lausevic, D. | Adzic, B. | Pejovic, N. | Pavicevic, Z., Specijalisticka veterinarska laboratorija, Podgorica (Montenegro)
During the survey period, 2005-2008, the total number of 3,225 poultry blood samples were tested by ELISA test, 609 samples of faeces from domestic poultry were tested by immunochromatographic assay, and 51 samples of tracheal and cloacal swabs of wild migratory bird species were tested by molecular Technique Real-Time PCR. All laboratory tests for the presence of avian influenza in domestic poultry and wild birds in Montenegro had negative results, leading to conclusion that during the survey period, the avian influenza virus was present on the territory of Montenegro. However, it should be noted that active monitoring of avian influenza in wild birds had started as of 2008, on a limited number of samples. Since every autumn more than 250,000 wild migratory birds fly to Montenegro from the territories where cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza have been regularly registered for the past few years, it is difficult to claim that the avian influenza virus has not been present on the territory of Montenegro in the past four years. Moreover, considering the local migration of birds among countries of the region where the disease has already been registered, it is highly probable that during the survey period, the avian influenza virus was present among the wild bird population, at least in the form of its less-virulent subtype. For that reason, activities on both active and passive monitoring of avian influenza in wild migratory birds beed to be intensified both as regards the scope and the sampling and testing procedures. Thus, the probability of detecting the potentially present virus would be higher, as well as the reliability of annual survey results.
