Cultivation of genotypes that show resistance or low susceptibility to pests and diseases, healthy and disease-free planting material, cultural practices, crop rotation and physical measures and functionally integrated within the plant protection strategy used in organic potato production. Apart from keeping yield stability, protection measures facilitate the preservation of biodiversity and environmental equilibrium. It is only when all the above measures are insufficiently effective that the pesticides permitted in organic production can be used, being the following: copper fungicides, sulphur, botanical insecticides, as well as the microbial ones. Recently developed genotypes show hypersensibility to the late blight pathogen, whereas wild species of the Solanum genus are used in developing pest-resistant genotypes. Organic potato acreage in Europe is increasing. Upland agricultural and environmental conditions in Serbia are favourable for organic potato production.
