Methods of early diagnostics of growth intensity were tested in the conditions of Karelia Republic. The objects were seedlings of Picea fennica and Picea sylvestris. Three populations from different areas of Karelia and Moscow Region were grouped from 39 clon generations. 1000 seeds of each cenopopulation were bed out in field. The cotyledon number (CN) and germination power were determined at 100 seedlings of each test combination. The growth properties were estimated by height, diameter, apical bud number, lateral shoot number, needle length, plant biomass. The positive correlation between growth rate and 3-needle bunch presence. It is recommended to choose samples better developed with 3-needle characteristic. The relation between CN and biometric parameters of biennial pine seedlings is not found. The CN importance in early diagnostics is not proved, but this criterion is significant for population selection.
