Soil-formation potential of forests at sand afforestation in forest-steppe and steppe environment

Soil formation features at sand afforestation in the forest-steppe zone (Sosnovka, Stow, the Belgorod Region, the RF) and in the steppe zone (Niznnij Dnepr left-bank terrace, the Kherson Region, Ukraine) are studied. The rate of humus layer formation under pine stands is higher in 2,2 times in the first zone than in the second one. The rate of soil formation varies from 0,8 till 2,1 10E-3 m a year in the forest steppe zone depending on the soil-formation potential of the different stands during the first 50-60 years after forestation. In the steppe zone a forest litter reaches 0,04 m under 20-25-aged pine stands and it does 0,07-0,08 m under mature-aged ones. The great differences in mortmass accumulation are noted subject to species of wood and stand age. It has reached 5,8-6,4 kg per square m under Scotch pine up to 30-40 years, it has done 11,2 kg under black pine up to 54 years, it has done 5,5-6,9 kg under 55-80-aged acacia. The soils under 50-60-aged pine stands have high humus content (0,8-0,9%) and the humus content under acacia stands is 1%
