Effect of irrigation intervals and sweet potato cultivars on infestation levels of the sweet potato weevil Cylas puncticollis Boheman

A field experiment was conducted for two consecutive seasons (2001/02 and 2002/03) to study the effect of three in-igation intervals (7, 14, and 21 days) and three sweet potato cultivars; namely, an exotic TIS2544 and two local cultivars: Baladi Yellow (BY) and Baladi Red (BR), on the sweet potato weevil Cylas pUl1cticollis Boheman infestation. The effect of harvesting time was also evaluated. The in-igation intervals had a remarkable effect on the percentage of infested storage reats, especially at late harvesting time. Twenty-one day irrigation interval treatment was more seriously infested than 7 and 14 days. This result confirmed the hypothesis that the water-stressed sweet potatoes suffer higher level of insect damage than unstressed ones. The local cultivars, BR and BY, had longer storage root necks and shorter storage root girth and showed” lower percentage of infested storage roots than the exotic cultivar. Root girth was positively correlated with sweet potato weevil infestation which is negatively con'elated with the storage root length. Late harvesting times, 6 and 7 months after transplanting of the cultivars, showed more sweet potato weevil damage
