Combining ability for yield and its components in half diallel crosses of local and introduced cultivars of upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)
2007
Ahmed, H.S.
Eight varieties belong to upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) viz: K-5, Barac (67)B, Sudac-K, Cim (70), Niab (78), Shambat-B, Acala (93)H and Chandry and their 28 F1 hybrids were subjected to studying the combining ability in half diallel analysis for seed cotton yield. The agronomic traits, used include 50% days to flowering, first sympodial node, number of sympodia per plant, number of bolls per plant, boll weight, seed index, lint index, ginning out-turn and fiber properties. A complete randomized block design with three replications was used in this experiment during seasons 2005/06 and 2006/07 at Rahad Research Station. Analysis of variance revealed significant variability for all measured characters except the trait first sympodial node in first season and the combined data. The cross K-5 x Acala (93)H(3709 kghaE-1) recorded the highest mean seed cotton yield followed by crosses K-5 x Shambat-B (3354 kghaE-1) and Niab (78) x Acala (93)H (3354 kghaE-1). The linear correlation revealed high significance for yield component with r values (0.58, 0.60 and 0.16) for number of bolls/plant, number of sympodial/plant and boll size respectively. Despite the ratio of general combining ability to specific combining ability revealing a non significant difference, I suggested use can be made to improve the varieties, K-5, Niab (78) and Acala (93)H and crosses K-5 x Acala (93)H, Barac (67) B x Shambat-B .and K-5 x Barac (67)B. General combining ability (GCA) study revealed that the variety K-5 was the best general combiner parent followed by Niab, (78)) Shambat-B and Acala (93)H. Also specific combining ability (SCA) showed that crosses K-5 x Acala (93)H, Barac (67) B x Shambat-B and K5 x Barac (67)B were the best intraspecific hybrids suggesting their utilization in recurrent selection
