A note on differential response of some sugarcane (saccharum spp) across biparental families to iron chlorosis under field conditions

An experiment on sugarcane first clonal ratoon was conducted during 2004 and 2005 seasons at the sugarcane breeding Institute, Coimbatore, in South India. About 46 families (39 biparental families) were involved in the study. The parents used in the crosses were of intervarietal and interspecific origin to insure a wide genetic variability in the population. The objective was to evaluate the biparental families of the material for tolerance to iron chlorosis under field condition. Tolerance to iron chlorosis was studied by spraying genotypes in all families (at the age of two months) for four times at a weakly interval by 1 % ferrous sulphate (Fe2SO4) and evaluated in a 1 to 4 scale. The overall performance of the total genotypes revealed about 44.26 % to be tolerant, 31.74% moderately tolerant, 19.74% moderately susceptible and 4.13% to be susceptible. Although the mean reaction to iron chlorosis in all families was 2.5, a higher proportion of tolerant genotypes (80 %) was observed in the families 971235 x Co 1148 and 971235 x Co 62198. On the other hand, higher proportion of susceptible genotypes (12 %) was observed in families 987032 x Co 93009 and Co 98003 x 971862 and to a lesser degree of susceptibility (10%) in the genotypes of the family CoH11 x 984843
