Colostrum is the first natural food for the newborn calf. Chemical composition of colostrum is very complex, as it is rich in nutrients and bioactive components. The most important bioactive components in the colostrum are immunoglobulins and growth factors. If absorbed across the small intestine wall in sufficient amounts, immunoglobulins protect the calf against the infections from the environment. Growth factors promote the growth and development of various tissues, especially those of the gut. It is important that calves receive the colostrum of good quality and in sufficient amounts immediately after calving or at least in the period of six hours after parturition to obtain adequate amount of immunoglobulins. After the calving the intestinal membrane become less and less permeable for the macromolecules, such as immunoglobulins and with the maturation of the intestinal cells more and more digestive enzymes are secreted into the lumen of the intestine which reduce the possibility that immunoglobulins will be absorbed in their undegraded form. After the 36 hours the intestinal membrane become impermeable for large molecules and the role of colostrum is only in the nutritional one.
