From 2005 to 2007 the Institute for Livestock Research in Raumberg-Gumpenstein works intensively on the topic 'Optimization of the nutrient supplementation of dairy cows during pasture'. Therefore in each of the 3 years of the trial´s duration 12 dairy cows are selected for a feeding trial. The animals are divided into 4 groups. Whereas the animals in the control group (full pasture) don´t get any additional fodder during the pasture period, the animals in the groups 'hay' respectively 'maize silage' get about 3,5 kg dry matter hay respectively maize silage. In these 3 groups concentrates are only fed up to the 120th day of lactation (600 kg fresh weight in total). With the double amount of concentrates in the 'concentrates' group the milk yield raised from 6.005 kg ('hay') respectively 6.228 kg ('control') and 6.685 kg ('maize silage') up to 6.948 kg per lactation in the first 2 years. In contrast the fat content in this group sank about 0,1%, whereas the protein content increased for approximately 0,05% (corn) up to 0,15% (hay). In comparison to the groups 'full pasture' and 'hay' the urea content of the milk could be reduced by 15 mg/100 ml by the supplementation of concentrates and by approximately 10 mg/100 ml by supplementation of maize silage. The complementation of maize silage and concentrates caused a decrease in the contents of insatiated fatty acids for about a third in total.
