Since 2006, the use of antibiotic growth promoters as feed additives is prohibited in the European Union. To maintain (gut) health of susceptive animals, such as piglets, calves and poultry, a vast array of products and measures are discussed and used as alternatives. Among it, probiotics, prebiotics and organic acids are the most important ones. Probiotics are living microorganisms that act beneficially on the intestinal microflora contributing to an improved intestinal eubiosis by suppression of pathogenic microorganisms. Probiotics have been shown to be effective against diarrhoea but the effects may vary depending on the diet and the environmental conditions. Prebiotics are carbohydrates which are not digestible by mammalian enzymes and serve as substrates for the growth of favourable microorganisms in the gut affecting gastrointestinal fermentation and immune function. Synbiotics are combinations of pro- and prebiotics with the aim to gain synergistic effects of both substance groups. Various organic acids are used as feed preservatives and to improve gut health and animal performance. Numerous studies have proven these positive effects. New developments are the use of mixtures of free and protected acids to be able to combine the beneficial effects on feed, stomach and lower intestinal tract. There are already effective alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters to be used in practice and the development of suitable combined formulations of the various substitutes will be a challenge for future research.
