A good portion of our data is spatiotemporal related, especially in context of agricultural land use. The best way to manage this information is the usage of a Geographic Information System (GIS). A GI-System cannot be reduced only to software but consists of additional components like hardware, data, procedures, and, of course, the people with know-how to operate that. The main part of GIS is geo-data. There are different types of data models for abstracting the real world entities regarding the needs of certain applications. Depending on these models suitable procedures can be applied in order to get new insights in spatial coherences of different topics. Splitting of data in layers each with homogeneous objects for horizontal (one layer) and vertical (multiple layers) analysis of data is a typical approach of GIS. Applications for agriculture mainly concern documentation and visualisation of information about cultivation. Middle and large scaled farms use precision farming for improving their economical success with positive impact on ecology. Agricultural research provides a huge range of applications. One of them is shown as an example at the end of this paper which should illustrate the practical work on GIS.
