In South America, livestock feeding rely mainly on grazing systems, and therefore grassland productivity determines livestock production. The pastures have usually low fertility and are exposed to continuous low pH and Al stresses, especially in south part of Brazil and Chile. Among legumes, forage Lotus species has greater potential for adaptation to environmentally-constrained areas of Latin America. Our project is integrating partners from EU and Latin America to help increase the Lotus productivity and nutritional value for livestock production. The main objectivities of the project are to generate new and important knowledge on the molecular biology physiology and metabolism on the model and cultivated Lotus species under stress conditions, collect and test the available plant material and its nitrogen-fixing symbiont, find the phenotypes with contrasting tolerance to abiotic stresses and use them for breeding. The characterization of Lotus response to Al stress started with the analysis of the growth response. It was found, that the Lotus corniculatus cv. St. Gabriel (U) and Lotus corniculatus cv. Draco are more sensitive, than cv. St. Gabriel (B), UFRGS, which are used in Brazil as well as the Est. Ganador from Uruguay. The membrane potential measurement showed stronger decrease of membrane potential of root cortical cells and leakage of ions in putative sensitive cultivars, suggesting lose of semipermeability of cell membranes. The active membrane potential was affected mainly by decrease of activity of the ATP pumps and so could cause lower growth of the cells in root prolongation zone.
