The economy and the environment are connected through material and energy flows. These flows are the key cause of environmental problems and can serve as indirect indicators of pressure on the environment. The leading method for assessing material flows and dematerialization at an economy-wide level was developed during the 1990s and standardized by Eurostat guide (Eurostat, 2001). In the Slovak Republic, the works on economy-wide material flow accounts and indicators are in progress via project Material flows analyse in management of natural sources focusing on energy utilisation of agricultural biomass funded by the APVV. This paper describes the application of economy wide material flow analysis to the economy of the SR. The balance of material domestic use is compiled and relevant indicator (Direct Material Inputs) is derived on the bases of the account and balances of material flows for 1997 – 2004.
