In accordance with the Energy policy of the EU, Slovakia prepared its own energy strategy in 2006. According to this strategy, renewable energy sources should contribute in higher majority to the production of electricity and heat. It is considered to establish energy forests and plantations on arable land which is not uąed for groceries and technical crops. This land would be forested, grassed and used for production of energy crops. The paper defines the limits of growing energy crops, resulting from the characteristics of the country, production efficiency of selected herbs, and related specific legislation. Influence of the density of plants on biomass production is analyzed: of sorgum - Hyso (Sorghum bicolor L. x Sorghum sudanense L.) and miscanthus (Miscanthus sinensis L.). It was confirmed that the production rate of one-year species hybrid - Hyso depended on the spatial structure and tillering ability. As for the production potential of perennial grass misccanthus (Miscanthus sinensis L.), it was observed that the mechanism of production efficiency was different and it was enhanced by the age. In the first year of growing (2007) the quantity of biomass was lower (8.43 t/ha), in the second year (2008) it increased significantly (20.35 t/ha). Also the interannual growth of biomass quantity was high.
