Paper mulberry (B. papyrifera) as an overstorey in agroforestry system was intercropped with azuki bean (Vigna angularis) to investigate its profits and effects on soil properties of steep sloping land, in the Phu Fa project, Nan province. Four treatments (A=control, B=paper mulberry only, C=paper mulberry with 3 rows of azuki, and D=paper mulberry with 5 rows of azuki) were set in three replicates based on degree of slope. Soil properties were analyzed, growth and biomass of paper mulberry and azuki were recorded. According to this study, soil properties were not significantly different among treatments, but it varied significantly among periods of study. However, a comparison of almost all soil properties before and after two years of cropping was insignificantly different. Growth in term of total height and DBH of paper mulberry in treatment B was significantly higher than those in other treatments (C and D, respectively), while biomass yield of paper mulberry were not significantly different among all treatments. Treatment D was the most economic combination due to its highest net present value (843.9 US dollar/ha), followed by treatment C (514.4 US dollar/ha) and B (431.6 US dollar/ha), respectively.
