Nowadays, a number of DNA markers have been widely used for gene mapping in many hereditary diseases. The popular markers are microsatellite and SNP markers. To access the quality of these markers, polymorphism was evaluated from the polymorphic information content value (PIC). PIC shows the usefulness of markers how much of their power. In this study, we compared polymorphism of 2 markers in a group of dogs with different degree of canine hip dysplasia. Most of the PIC in microsatellite markers ranging from moderate (0.3-0.59) to high ( GT 0.60) that were much higher variable than SNP markers. The highest PIC value in SNP was 0.375 that came from the difference of number of alleles at the locus. Microsatellite markers provided 1-16 alleles as compared with SNP that gave only 1-2 alleles. However, the results suggested these two markers were effective for gene mapping. From the results, more than 80 percent and 70 percent of microsatellite and SNP makers in the dog population had high and effective PIC value for gene mapping in canine hip dysplasia.
