Study on water resources used in Giant Freshwater Prawn Culture in Thoeng District, Chiang Rai Province was conducted during 2004. A total of 45 farmers were interviewed to investigate their opinion on water resources management practices. Staff gates were used to measure daily water level in pond of 6 sampled farms classifying into small, medium and large farm size. Meanwhile precipitation and evaporation data was gathered from local meteorology station. Water supply, drainage, evaporation, water balance and on-farm efficiency were calculated. The results indicated that averaged amount of water supply and drainage in prawn culture pond was 1,840.59 cubic m/rai and 34.10 cubic m/rai, respectively. Averaged precipitation and evaporation was 417.44 cubic m/rai and 17.61 cubic m/rai, respectively. Water supply need for a prawn crop was approximately 3,104,200 cubic m or 3,500.00 cubic m/rai. The result showed that on-farm efficiency of water used in cultured pond was high. Water resource management through water allocation and water reuse approaches in this area is possible.
