Facultatively anaerobic bacterium, Bacillus sp. TW-1 isolated from an anaerobic digester produces extracellular xylanolytic-cellulolytic enzyme system containing xylanase, beta-xylosidase, arabinofuranosidase, carboxymethylcellulase (CMCase), avicelase, cellobiohydrolase and beta-glucosidase when grown on corn hull as a sole carbon source under an aerobic condition. Sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) of crude enzyme preparation exhibited at least 26 proteins and zymograms revealed multiple xylanases and cellulases containing 12 xylanases and 12 CMCases. The crude xylanolytic-cellulolytic enzyme efficiently hydrolyzed corn hull better than those of corn cob, sugarcane bagasse, rice straw and rice husk. The major products of hydrolysis are xylose and glucose.
