Oil palm trees are promoted to plant in many areas in Thailand so there are many agricultural and industrial wastes. The fiber from oil palm is longer than that from eucalyptus wood which is suitable for applying as a raw material for pulping. Pulping of oil palm empty fruit bunches by soda and sulfate processes is studied. The condition for soda process is as following: NaOH concentration=18-24 percent, liquor to raw material ratio=6:1, maximum temperature= 170 deg C, and total time=3 hours. The optimum NaOH concentration is 24 percent. The condition for sulfate process is 15-22 percent active alkaline, 20 percent sulfidity, liquor to raw material ratio of 5:1, maximum temperature at 170 deg C, total time for 2 hours. The optimum active alkaline concentration is 17.50 percent. Soda pulp is easier to bleach by process with 16-17 percent of chlorine dioxide-1 percent of hydrogen peroxide-0.2 percent of chlorine dioxide-1 percent of hydrogen peroxide (D-P-D-P) than sulfate pulp. Soda pulp produced have lower yield, reject and kappa no. than sulfate pulp produced. Physical Properties of pulp, unbleached soda and sulfate pulp are not so different except folding endurance, soda pulp is lower than sulfate pulp. For bleaching is showed that the bleached soda pulp properties is lower than bleached sulfate pulp properties except tear index bleached soda is higher than bleached sulfate pulp.
