Study of plant growth by subsoil irrigation system (SIS) was conducted using the porous ceramic formula 1 (F1) and formula 2 (F2) which had different percentage of water absorption ability as 27.00 percent and 45.00 percent, respectively. By comparing with the conventional irrigation system (CIS) for the growth of chili (Capsicum frutescens Linn.), the results showed that plant height and canopy width were not significantly different (P GT 0.05) among the treatments. However, the fresh weight of plants treated with the SIS (F1:420.17 g and F2:401.50 g) was higher than those treated with the CIS (135.42 g). The averaged daily water-use of the SIS (85.97 mL/plant/day) was lower than those of the CIS (304.46 mL/plant/day) and can be calculated to a ratio of around 1:3.5. The soil hardness of in a pot received the CIS (62.29 kPa) was 2.3 and 3.4 folds higher than those received the SIS:F1 (F1=27.02 kPa) and SIS:F2 (F2=18.32 kPa), respectively. The results suggested that the SIS was not only reduces the amount of water provision but also reduces a problem of high soil density.
