Data of purebred Landrace (LR), Large White (LW) and crossbred 50 percent Landrace 50 percent Large White (50LR), 50 percent Large White 50 percent Landrace (50LW), 75 percent Landrace 25 percent Large White (75LR) and 75 percent Large White 25 percent Landrace (75LW) sows of a commercial swine farm were used to estimate heterosis effects on total born (TB), stillbirth (SB) and gestation period (GEST). The reproduction data pertained to 28,275 litters born between 2002 and 2006. The results showed that heterosis for TB in 50LW, 50LR and 75LW were 5.75, 5.19 and 1.73 percent of the purebred mean, respectively. Heterosis for SB in 75LR, 50LW and 50LR were -8.07, -7.78 and -6.67 percent of the purebred mean, respectively. Heterosis for GEST in 50LW and 50LR were -0.21 and -0.16 percent of the purebred mean, respectively. Positive heterosis effect for TB and negative heterosis effect for SB indicated that crossbred sows can produce more TB and less SB than purebred sows. Heterosis for GEST was negative, however the magnitude was less than 1 percent. This indicated that crossbred sows production had a little effect on GEST.
