The aim of this work was to observe live weight and growth of piglets that came from 11 Large White x Landrace sows (2nd litter). Ultra-violet measurements of backfat thickness were used to evaluate sows' body condition. The measurements were carried out close to farrowing and at the date of weaning. The sows were divided into 3 groups according to their backfat thickness as follows: 1) 23 mm or more; 2) 20-22 mm (optimal body condition); 3) more than 20 mm. Before farrowing the backfat thickness reached these average values: 1) 27,95 mm; 2) 20,67 mm; 3) 17,17 mm. The highest reduction of backfat thickness during the suckling period was observed in sows of the 3rd group (6,83 mm), the lowest one in the 1st group (4,33 mm). It was 5,56 mm in the 2nd group. The average number of all and live born piglets was as follows: 1) 11,33, resp. 8,00; 2) 13,00 resp. 11,00; 3) 11,50 resp. 11,00. The highest average live weight at birth was observed in the 2nd group (1,50 kg), the lowest one in the 3rd group (1,24 kg). The same tendencies were measured at the 21th day and at the 28th day (weaning) as the piglets in the 1st group reached 8,03 kg, in the 2nd group 9,20 kg and in the 3rd group 6,91 kg. One week after weaning, the highest weight was observed in piglets in the 2nd group.
