An experiment was performed to investigate the effects of dietary protein content (DPC) and level of intake (LI) on the performance of Iberian piglets from shortly after weaning (10 kg) to 25 kg BW. The trial followed a 4 (DPC: 190, 170, 145 and 120 g CP/kg DM) x 2 (LI: 95 and 70% x ad libitum) factorial design with six replicates per combination of treatments (n = 48). Four approx. isoenergetic diets (12.3-12.8 kJ ME/g DM) were prepared by diluting the higher DPC with a protein-free diluting mixture. Pigs were fed in two daily equal meals and water was freely available. An N-balance trial was performed at approximately 13 kg BW. Average daily gain was higher in animals fed 190 and 170 g CP/kg DM than in the other two dietary treatments (350-345 vs 314-297 g/d respectively; P<0.05). Diets providing 190 and 170 g CP/kg MS resulted in higher feed conversion ratio and gain/IEM ratio (g/MJ EM) (P<0.05). Nitrogen retained was significantly lower with the diet containing 120 g PB/kg DM (P<0.05). Protein requirements for optimum growth and performance of Iberian piglets can be achieved with the treatment providing 170 g ideal CP/kg DM (9.20 g digestible protein/MJ ME).
