Influence of the origin of soybean meal on performance of broilers from seven to thirty five days of age | Efecto del origen de la harina de soja sobre los parámetros productivos en pollos de engorde

A total of 240 straight-run broilers (ROSS 308), one-day old were used to study the influence of source of soybean meal (SBM) on productive performance of broilers. There were 4 experimental diets based on cereals and SBM under study with the same crude protein (CP) content. The SBM tested were obtained from Argentina (ARG), Brazil (BRA), or USA (either from Owensboro Grain, KY; USA-1 or Carolina Soya, NC; USA-2). Each treatment was replicated 12 times and the experimental unit was a cage with 5 chicks each. There were 2 feeding periods; 1 to 21 d (3000 kcal AMEn/kg, 21% CP, and 1.25% total Lys) and 21 to 35 d of age (3140 kcal AMEn/kg, 19.7% CP, and 1.14% total lys). From 7 to 35 d of age, the only difference detected was for feed conversion ratio that was lowest for USA-2 and highest for ARG meal with US-1 and BRA meals being intermediate (1.490, 1.557, 1.529, and 1.529, respectively; P < 0.01). Also, from 7 to 21 d of age, broilers fed ARG meal showed higher feed intake (84.2 vs 79.4, 80.3, and 80.3; P < 0.001) but with less efficiency (1.313 vs 1.254, 1.271, and 1.285; P < 0.01) than broilers fed USA-1, USA-2 or BRA meal, respectively. The differences observed in broiler performance among the different soybean meals might be due to the differences in NDF, trypsin inhibitor (TI), CP, and saccharose content. In fact, ARG SBM had more NDF and less CP and lower TI activity than USA-2 meal. It is concluded that feed mills should analyze incoming SBM batches for major nutrients prior to feed formulation.
