This paper analyses the goat farms that are located in the area of influence of the PDO "Ibores Cheese" (Cáceres, Spain). This area is characterized by a difficult orography and climatology and by having low income indicators and low density of population. Nevertheless, the goat production of the area contributes remarkably to the economic and social development of this rural region. Information was obtained through direct interviews with 61 goat farmers using a structured questionnaire. The results show that the operations make a management based on traditional farming systems. Due to this management, there are some problems that need to be solved, indicating that some practices could be improved. Among them, we emphasize: production (milk and kids) is very seasonal, which renders as a result lower productivity; deficient enterprise structure; low level of education of the farmers; and high level of rented land. These characteristics impair the investment in technological improvements and the commercialization of the production, limiting the competitiveness in comparison with other areas and other livestock production systems.
