The Limousin breed is recognized by their qualities, such as their extreme hardiness and excellent productivity. The calving interval (CI) of a cow determines its overall performance, which is decisive for the reproductive capacity of meat breeds. In the semi-intensive and extensive systems of livestock production growth is slower resulting from diets availability. The aim of this study was to study the calving interval, according to the production systems used in southern Portugal. The calving interval is influenced by the region of production and by the production system. As a result of increased surveillance of the herd, the CI in the semi-intensive system is lower. Thus it appears that the main factor that makes the CI vary in different regions is the system of production there. Referring to the Alentejo Central and Baixo Alentejo, where the main production system is extensive, have a higher CI, with an average of 22 days more than the Alto Alentejo and Algarve, where the production system is the Semi-Intensive. Alentejo Litoral, where there are the two systems of production, presents 8 days more than the Alto Alentejo and Algarve.
