A total of 58941 lactations from 33 farms (15 zero grazing and 18 under grazing management system) were studied to evaluate the effects of lambing season on performance of Spanish Assaf ewes. The number or parturitions was maximum in winter, with higher proportions for intensive than for extensive systems, more than 60% of the ewes lambing from January to June. Daily milk production per ewe was greater in winter, and minimum in autumn (extensive) and summer (intensive). Extensive systems showed the greatest interval between lambing dates, the greatest values being reached in winter and autumn. Ewes were milked for an average of 180 days, and 67% of the ewes had finished their lactation by day 210. There are differences due to lambing season in grazing and indoor systems, which should be taken into account when planning managing options.
