The effect of two superovulatory treatments (eCG/FSH in single dose -Group S; 21 ewes- or FSH alone in six decreasing doses _Group D; 19 ewes-) on the production of embryos and in vitro viability after vitrification was studied in the Spanish local Ojalada breed. The ovarian response and embryo production were assessed on day 7 after oestrus. No differences were elucidated between groups either on ovulation rate 15.9 +/- 2.0 vs 14.5 +/- 2.1 corpora lutea for D and S groups, and number of viable (7.8 +/- 1.7 vs 7.7 +/- 1.6, respectively) and freezable (6.4 +/- 1.4 vs 6.6 +/- 1.6, respectively) embryos per ewe. After vitrification, reexpansion rates were 50,0% and 63,3%, respectively. After staining, blastocysts derived from group S showed a mean number of cells significantly higher than those derived from group D (228 +/- 49 vs 65 +/- 11; P<0.01). It was concluded that a single injection of eCG/FSH can be an efficient simplified superovulatory protocol in Ojalada ewes in terms of the number and viability of recovered embryos.
