The aim of this work was to analyse the effects of forage:concentrate ratio (30:70 and 70:30) and forage type (alfalfa and grass hay) on the bacterial communities in Rusitec fermenters. In order to study microbial diversity, DNA was isolated from samples of solid- and liquid-associated bacteria (SAB and LAB, respectively) and the ITS1 region of rDNA operon was amplified by PCR and analyzed by ARISA. Forage:concentrate ratio did not affect the community profiles developed in Rusitec fermenters, but the type of forage had an effect on SAB rather that LAB profiles. Grass forage promoted the development of a higher number of bacterial species and a higher diversity than alfalfa hay.
