Agroclimatic classification of Ethiopia.

Agricultural scientists have already realized the importance of agroclimatic analysis in crop production although success at farm level has been limited. The limited successes have been achieved either through modifications of the local climate or by adjusting cropping schedules to the local climate. The modification of the local climate is possible to a limited extent e.g. intercropping. However, the use of agroclimatic information to adjust to the local climate is widespread throughout the world. The quantification of agroclimatic resources has been used to delineate agrtoclimatic zones. Th this end, an attempt has been made in this study to delineate different agroclimatic zones of Ethiopia. The criteria used to delineate the agroclimatic zones are: the type of growing season based on the time of its onset and its length. With these criteria, 21 agroclimatic zones are recognized, these are categorized into four well-defined agroclimatic belts. The subdivisions would contribute substantially for planning sustainable agriculture, land use development, irrigation development and agroclimatic studies.
