An on-farm experiment was conducted at two locations (Eteya-Gonde and Bekoji) in Arsi zone of southeastern Ethiopia for two consecutive years (1995-96) to find out economic optimum rate and time of N application for two recently released bread-wheat varieties, namely, Qubsa and Mitike. The partial budget as well as sensitivity analysis indicated that basal application of 123 and 41 kg N/ha for Qubsa and Mitike, respectively, resulted in the highest net benefit at Eteya-Gonda with an acceptable marginal rate of return. At Bekoji, split application of 82 kg N/ha for Qubsa and planting of Mitike without N resulted in better net benefit with an acceptable marginal rate of return. Regarding variety, Qubsa, the semi-dwarf variety, should get N application priority in both locations for better net benefit from grain yield than Mitike. With respect to location, N fertilization at Bekoji pays better than at Eteya-Gonde. Therefore, priority for N fertilizer distribution and application should be encouraged at Bkoji, in case of shortage of N supply.
