The by-products of coffee processing are mainly coffee pulp and husk derived from wet and dry processing, respectively. Due to the contribution of these by-products to environmental pollution, environmentally friendly disposal methods are necessary. The present study deals with utilization and economical disposal of coffee processing by-products. A composting trial was conducted using coffee pulp and husk at Gummer Coffee Plantation in Ethiopia to establish operational indices and investigate the factor controlling the composting of coffee processing by-products. The composting of coffee pulp revealed that the early rise in temperature and pH in the heap was an indication for normal composting process. Furthermore, composting of both by-products alone revealed the importance of incorporating other bulking agents and nitrogen-rich amendments to accelerate the composting process and prepare nutritionally balanced compost. Thus, the results of this experiment indicated the need for other organic and inorganic amendments prior to composting.
