Effects of Drainage and genotype on yield and some yield components of fata bean on a highland vertisol in Ethiopia.

Faba bean (Vicia faba L.) is among the major grain food legumes of low input 'break' crops cultivated in the highlands of Ethiopia. The productivity of faba bean is constrained by poor drainage on Vertisols with high rainfall. A field experiment was conducted over four years from 1997-2000 to study the effects of different drainage methods on yield and yield components of selected faba bean cultivars at Ginchi, Ethiopia, Four different drainage methods, namely t he broad beds and furrows (BBF), flat, ridges and furrows (RF) and camber beds (CB) were arranged as main plot and three selected faba bean cultivars (CS20DK, KUSE-2-27-33 and local landrace) as sub-plot in a split plot design with three replications. Results indicated that plant height and number of pods per plant were significantly (P0.05) affected both by drainage methods and faba bean cultivars. Similarly, seed yield of faba bean was significantly (P0.05) affected by drainage except in one crop season. The adjusted mean seed yield was significantly (P0.05) affected by drainage conditions and cultivars used. The highest seed yield increment (98%) using the BBF over the flat seedbed conditions was obtained in the 1998 crop season.
