Literature reporting research on the incidence of citrus dieback in Ghana and current work on the choice of suitable rootstocks is reviewed. In future work it is suggested that emphasis might be given to the establishment and maintenance of a virus-free budwood certification programme through virus-indexing of available preferred cultivars in the country, the institution of citrus seed certification programmes and the continuation of the intensive search for disease-tolerant rootstocks. The use of imported and locally-selected virus-free budwood on disease-tolerant rootstocks is expected to maintain the citrus industry of the country. The recommendations are applicable to other West African countries with similar citrus problems.
