Nitrogen application to groundnuts did not increase kernel yield significantly. There are indications, however, that, initially, the crop might benefit from low rate application on savanna soils cleared from long fallows. The timing of fertilizer N application might of importance in influencing yield and absorption. Percent N derived from fertilizer in the kernel, husk forage increased with increasing rate of N application but did not exceed 32%, even though as much 120 kg N/ha was applied. The distribution of fertilizer N was similar in forage, husk and kernel for anyone level of application. The results suggest that combined N application might not increase the crude protein content of the groundnut provided rhizobial activity present.
