Eggs and larvae of the kola filIit fly were first observed 10 weeks after filIit set and the mature larvae escaped from the pods through tiny holes shortly before or at pod maturity. The larval exit holes are believed to act as entry points to kola weevils. The fly was recorded on four out of ten Cola and Sterculia species sampled. These are C. nitida, C. acuminata, C. verticillata and C. rostrata. Cola verticillata and C. rostrata grow wild in the kola-growing areas. The wild species may act as alternative hosts during the off seasons of the cultivated species.
