This is a review article summarizing the results of investigations on the nutritive value of cocoa and its by-products, and the problems involved in their utilization as feed for livestock. It is suggested that further work should be conducted with the aim of developing cocoa products which are suitable for livestock feeding. It is concluded that cocoa and its by-products can be an excellent source of protein and energy for livestock, especially ruminants, but because of the theobromine content which is toxic to animals, It is necessary that the theobromine be first extracted. Alternatively, the cocoa products should be fed in very limited quantities.
