Soil of kola, Cola nitida Vent. (Schott and Endlicher), groves in Western Nigeria

The physical and chemical characteristics of soils cropped to kola (Cola nitida) in four areas of production within the Nigerian kola belt were studied from 164 samples collected in a survey of groves. The results are discussed with the aid of tables of mean and range of values found. The physical characteristics (silt, clay and sand contents) were nearly identical in all the four zones. The most noticeable difference in the chemical data was in the soil reaction (pH in 1 N KCl varied from 4.0 to 6.8), and in the exchangeable K contents. The soils in the southern parts of the kola belt were generally much more acidic and had lower content of exchangeable K than the soil samples from the northern areas of the kola belt. Nutrient deficiency symptoms were easily noticeable.
