The investigations were carried out at Nyankpala in the guinea savanna and at Kwadaso in the forest zone of Ghana in two growing seasons. Early topping always produced less tuber yields but higher seed yam yields, smaller tubers and bigger seed yams than late topping. Number of tubers and seed yams were not significantly affected by time of topping at Kwadaso (forest zone), but at Nyankpala (guinea savanna zone), late topping gave, significantly, fewer seed yams in 1973 and more tubers in 1974. Total yam yield was not affected significantly by time of topping at Kwadaso but early topping produced significantly higher total y~m yield at Nyankpala in 1973. Closer spacing gave higher tuber yield at topping, higher seed yam and total yam yields, and more but smaller tubers and seed yams. Time of topping interacted significantly with spacing for some parameters.
