Population of clupeids in the Volta Lake
1973
Vanderpuye, C.J., Ghana Department oj Fisheries
Stock assessment studies on fish populations in Volta Lake have disclosed that the two clupeid species Pellonula afzeliusi and Cynothrissa mento are the most abundant species group in the Lake. They comprised an average of 77 % by weight of total gill-net catches. Despite their proven abundance, no effective method has yet been devised for their mass capture. Early attempts to attract them to a light source were not very successful though the method has been successfully used in other countries in Africa. Should the light attraction experiment fail, gill-net will have to be used. The present study has sought to determine the most effective gill-net mesh size for their capture. It also updates knowledge on their distribution, abundance, trends in abundance, and some other points pertinent to their commercial exploitation.
