Determination of skin hair follicle characteristics of Iranian native camels to improve the quantity and quality of cashmere.

This experiment was conducted to identify some aspects of follicle characteristics and the extent of follicle inactivity which minimizes cashmere harvest of dromedarius and bactrianus camels kept in different parts of Iran. A total of 292 dromedarian and 16 bactrian male and female camels were grouped into different age classes. All groups of camels were supplemented with forage and grain during winter and were grazed in other seasons. To determine the percentage of follicle inacvtivity and other follicle characteristics samples of skin were taken from the right midside of animals. Analysis of variance was performed using a one-way and two-way SAS package and the means and the standard error of means were generated with this program. Significant (P0.05) difference was found in S/P ratio and follicle density between the two species of camels. The overall average S/P ratio, secondary follicle density and total primary and secondary follicle density of dromedarian camels was 5.87±0.65, 27.32±2.76 and 32.15±3.61 respectively. The overall average S/P ratio, secondary follicle density and total primary and secondary follicle density of bactrian camels was 9.24±1.23, 36.52±3.69 and 41.62±3.71 respectively. There was no significant difference in the percentage of follicle inactivity between the two species of camels. The overall average percentage of secondary follicle inactivity was 31.63±14.73.
