Taxonomy of Verticillium section Albo-erecta was investigated and proposed for a revision using a large number of isolates obtained from various hosts and from all over the world. Morphological and molecular methods were applied in order to understand the relationship of taxa under study. Colony features, growth rates and measurements of various fungal structures were compared/recorded in addition to molecular criteria such as sequences of small subunit (SSU) and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of ribosomal DNA and translation elongation factor 1-a (tef). Based on the information obtained through the above methods we decided that the section Albo-erecta should be divided into five new genera (Leptobacillium, Bigutticillium, Myxogastrillium, Ovicillium, Hypoccillium), 12 new species (Bigutticillium disporum, B. chlamydosporum, Myxogastrillium fuliginicola, Ovicillium attenuatum, O. oosporum, O. subglobosum, O. napiforme, O. peronaticola, O. agreste, Nectriopsis cylindrospora, N. subglobosa, N. ellipsospora) and a variety (L. leptobactrum var. calidius). ITS region was not sufficient to distinguish all morphological Ovicillium species, therefore partial tef was sequenced and was found useful to separate all Ovicillium species identified using morphological criteria. Further sequences from more isolates of the above genera is necessary to be generated in order to formally and properly described the proposed new taxa.
