This research was started in 1995, in order to study the effect of thinning on the young stand plantations of velvet maple ( Acer velutinum Boiss). The silvicultural interventions were included 3 main treatments (medium thinning, heavy thinning and control), 2 secondary treatment (3 years and 5 years rotation) in the fully randomized design with three replications. There are 9 plots in the experimental design with an area of 0.3-0.4 hectare. Before starting the thinning, the mean height and dominant height of the initial 10 years old plantation were 10.86m and 12.14m, respectively. Results derived from treatments showed the moved storyes, positive effects of thinning on the future trees diameter (1.1 cm/year), and reduction of the slenderness factor ( d h= 79) in the year 2006, of the 1% significants. The wood product of thinning in diameter class 12.7 in 1996 and to be increased to 21.5 in 2006 has been utilized in the carpentry, particel board and forgery. The mean annual basal area increment between two measurements (1995 and 1998) was 3 m2/year/ha. The mean annual volume increment (remained stand) was 15.43 m3/ha/year, and the mean annual volume increment (remained stand + removed trees) was 29.07 m3/ha/year too. According to statictical analyses of quantitative and qualitative characteristics the heavy thinning with 5 years rotation is the best treatment in the lowland area of hyrcanian forest.
