Investigation on the suitable spacing and combination of ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) and maple (Acer velutinum Boiss.) in plantation.

In order to determine the most suitable mixture and spacing of maple and ash, three levels of planting space including 1.5×1.5, 2×2 and 2.5×2/5 meters and five level of species mixture including: pure maple, 2 maple and 1 ash, 1 maple and 1 ash, 1 maple and 2 ash and pure ash in planting line. Statistical design was split plots in randomized completely plot with three replications. The site allocated in north slope of Sari forest in Mazandaran province at 250 m a.s.l.. After termination of ten years period of the trail, the results showed that a lot of maple seedlings was attacked with Agrilis viridis and ruined. There was no relationship between survival of any of species with increasing and decreasing of another species in mixture treatments. The greatest percentages of survival was relevant to spacing of 2×2 meter in Acer pure plantation. Increasing the maple in mixture treatment leaded to rising of the h/d of ash in spacing of 1.5×1.5 meter. This results was not seen in maple indusial in mixture treatments. In general percentage of forking in ash was more than of maple. Forking of maple trees was minimum in the spacing of 2×2 meter. Percentage of forking increased with increasing of space of planting in the pure ash plantation and most of mixture planting treatments . The height of forking in mixture stands was more than pure planting of both species. The most stand survival and production related to spacing of 2*2 meter in more mixture treatments. The maximum and minimum of volume was seen in pure maple and pure ash plantation respectively. In the mixtures treatment the high production related to mixture of 2 maple+1ash planted in line.
