Effects of long-day treatment on flowering time of ranunculus species

Common Ranunculus cultivars in Kagawa Prefecture were tested to elucidate whether long-day treatment induces early flowering and impacts on the yield of cut flowers. The possibility of using a technique to induce early flowering was also evaluated. 1. Time of leaf appearance was earlier in plants that received long-day treatment than in untreated plants. Early leaf appearance resulted in early flower-bud emergence and flowering, and the degree of earliness varied among the cultivars. 2. Leaf position at the time of flower-bud emergence varied among the cultivars, but was not influenced by long-day treatment. 3. The number of axillary shoots of cultivar 'Sakuratemari' was decreased by long-day treatment, while that of cultivars 'Tsukitemari' and 'Benitemari' was only slightly influenced by the treatment. 4. Cultivar 'Tsukitemari' flowered at a different time depending on the number of years after shoot apex culture. The number of days before the beginning of flowering was reduced in the second year. 5. Although there are many aspects associated with cultivating certain cultivars that remained to be solved, long-day treatment is considered to be a base method in the development of a forced cultivation technique.
