Research on optical characteristics of birch wood and plywood covered with finishing material at different conditions of their exploitation. The analysis of plywood market shows, that consumers are giving priority to birch plywood with light colours. For production of plywood wart birch (Betula pendula Roth.) and downy birch (Betula pubescens Ehrl.) wood mainly is used in Latvia. The research is made on changes of optical characteristics of plywood at visible spectral scale with different conditions of the exploitation taken into account, where wart birch (Betula pendula Roth.) to downy birch (Betula pubescens Ehrl.) wood is compared. Likewise are researched these characteristics on samples of downy birch (Betula pubescens Ehrl.) plywood covered with finishing material kept under the ultra-violet light according to the standard GOST 92103-76. It is proven, that wart birch wood is more sustainable than downy birch wood at all conditions of exploitation and plywood finishing materials in market now, are not able to ensure wood protection under the ultra-violet light influence, except special ones.
