The European pond turtle Emys orbicularis (Linnaeus, 1758) is the rare and protected species of Latvia. In 2008 the Plan of species protection was affirmed and is realized for its retention in Latvia. The present book is the component part of Plan realization in species protection and contains recommendations regarding the environmental planning for preservation the European pond turtle in Latvia. The practical recommendations of the present book are developed, basing on the results of the research carried out by the authors, as well as on literature data. Therewith, we consulted Latvian and foreign specialists from Belarus, Lithuania, Poland, Spain and Germany. In the book a special attention is paid to natural environmental planning, biotopes and territorial planning. The peculiarities of pond planning and other reservoirs, parks, railroads, melioration, forest works, populated areas, roads, stock-raising farms, sheep breeding, fish ponds, etc. are examined. The peculiarities of ecological and rural tourism planning, recultivating works, operating time, infomedia are separately examined in the book. The book can be used as additional teaching aid for students and pupils in the courses of environmental planning, nature protection, and herpetology; by developing and managing of projects; as well as the source of information for landowners in Latvia, on whose territories dwells European pond turtle.
