Understanding rice black bug populations dynamics through GIS [Geographic Information System]

This study explored the use of Geographic Information System (GIS), a computer system designed to work with spatial-referenced data, in understanding the impact of a system-wide scheduled water release on plant synchrony; and its influence on the abundance and distribution of the rice black bug (RBB) in the general rice production area of Midsayap, North Cotabato. Six study sites were selected; each has its own schedule of irrigation water release, utilization and cut-off. Light trapping, pest field population monitoring and crop damage assessment were done. Planting map data and pest attribute data were imported into GIS. Map layers showing pest population distribution and abundance pattern and trend were generated. Results showed that planting pattern with Midsayap rice production areas is highly asynchronous. Planting interval between early planted areas and late planted areas reached up to a maximum of four months. Moreover, RBB population is at highest when most of the rice fields within Midsayap are at harvest to follow period. Generally, the abundance of RBB population both in light trap and field, is highly influenced by the growth stage of rice crop present at the field. RBB population is low when standing crops are at vegetative to early reproductive stages, dramatically increases towards crop maturity then reached it peak at crop maturity and early weeks of fallow period.
